Style matters! And reflects! (english version)

Climbing is not only a sport, it’s a lifestyle. That is heard and read again and again. And it is probably true. To me it fits anyway. Therefore, it is important for me, to express this lifestyle with the clothes I am wearing. In my early days as a climber I wondered about “dirtbags” loitering at the crag, wearing tattered pants and more rags than shirts. For a long time I didn’t get it. Today Dirtbagging is dead.

Instead, the spirit of the pioneers from the past continues to live in some of us. For one within some of us weekend warriors that aim to express their attitude by the vertical and hence not only craggin hard but remind us by all their doing of the “masters of stone”. They spray the spirit of old, enjoy the time together at the crag or the gym, live the collective, value the cooperation, respect nature and act for a tomorrow.

On the other hand there are the ones going a step further and establishing a business around their climbing life. Meanwhile, several small “companies” exist, offering products for climbers and coincidentally pointing out a statement. They barely get rich, but enrich us. They stand for sustainability and fair products, produce local, vegan or with organic materials or recycle worn out equipment.

Each of us supporting these labels does not only look buff, one gives a statement!

Style matters! And reflects!

With this blog we present a few of these labels and wander through a stylish journey of Europe. Our selection is purely subjective, but full of conviction.

strich-in-blaulogo-dessin-grisABK is funky! Nicolas and his crew are cool, creative, nonchalant and probably a bit crazy. They took up residence at Voiron, close to Grenoble at the foot of the French alps. There they design not only freaky fashion but manic web content and videos. Check it out!

Belmez Face, the hard rocker from Spain. To be precise: Belmez Face is a two-headed biorobotics machinery formed by gear from alien material.

In the town of Belmez de Moraleda, Andalusia paranormal phenomena are observed since 1971 as images of faces appearing in the concrete floor of a private house. That’s where the name comes from. It somehow fits to the attitude of the label.

Hence, the brand ambassadors are part of a brigade. Supposedly this is the reason why all faces are hidden behind beanies, masks, bags or glasses.

Motto:
“The dark side of climbing”

Commitment:
As appropriate for guerrilla fighters, little is known about their engagement for the environment. Anyway all products are manufactured in Madrid, Spain. Obviously they are committed to their fellow humans. At least they are offering therapies. If one wants to lay down on the couch? Check out the videos on their website and decide for yourself.

One of their t-shirts is called “FUCK OLYMPICS”. What a statement! Not necessarily good for the environment but in a sort a commitment, too.

Product range:
Pants and shorts, hoodies and shirts, beanies, lots of accessories right up to music CD’s. Additionally, a climbing hold in the shape of a “Belmez Face”.

Favorite:

CHALK MACHT ALBERN is our local brand, at least if you live in Frankfurt/Main. It’s a pretty young label, Basti founded it in 2015.

Basti is not only operating “Bastis Bastelstube” in Frankfurt, he is also the caretaker of Boulderwelt Frankfurt, one of our local bouldering gyms. Walking through the gym he got the impression, that a bunch of people hanging out there are — like himself — insane. He ascribed his observation to the high concentration of chalk in the air. The name of the label was born: CHALK MAKES GOOFY (CHALK MACHT ALBERN).

Motto:
“CHALK MAKES GOOFY”

Commitment:
The collection is 100% fair wear and made from cotton. Colors are vegan, based on water and eco-friendly. All parts are produced by hand in “Bastis Bastelstube”. Each piece is unique.

Product range:
Hoodies, sweatshirts, tops, T-shirts, gym bags and much more.

Favorite:
Each piece is unique, choose your own.

The idea to upcycle climbing ropes is worth an award. Julia does not only transform this perfectly, she creates art. She manufactures and combines worn out climbing ropes and designs all kinds of useful and beautiful stuff. Thus, products arise, that never look the same. Each piece is one of a kind.

What is upcycling?
While recycling is the process of converting waste into new materials, when upcycling raddled things are creatively transformed and reused as products with a new purpose. It is still visible what the product had been once, the new item has history, it tells a story.

Motto:
“Upcycling with climbing ropes — for climbers & world saviors!”

Upcycling reduces waste. All products are manufactures in Cologne, either by Jule herself or in a sheltered workshop operated by CARITAS in Cologne-Ossendorf. Each piece is unique.

logo-jung-espKristin Jung took with her label the climbing community by assault. Since 2012 its almost impossible moving around in a gym or at a crag and not meeting “Emil” or “Fritzi”.

As sober and factual the website of jung-ware may appear at first sight, the stuff is colorful and stylish. Besides, all pieces are so comfortable to wear, that you will hardly take them off for bed.

Not least is Mia, my beloved Campusboard- Training partner from earlier days, part of the team. The pants are — literally — tailor-made for her.
